When we first started bringing our family (and friends with children) to Myoko, we were pleasantly surprised. Many people assume the bigger, more famous resorts like Niseko or Hakuba are automatically better for families, but we have found Myoko to be one of the most relaxing and enjoyable ski destinations in Japan for kids and multi-generational groups.
Here is our honest take on why Myoko works so well for families and how to make the most of a trip with children.
1. Shorter Lift Queues = More Fun, Less Waiting
One of the biggest advantages for families is how short the lift queues are in Myoko, even during school holidays. Kids (and parents) get frustrated quickly when they spend more time waiting than skiing. In Myoko, children can spend far more time actually sliding down the slopes, which keeps everyone happier.
2. Excellent Beginner and Family-Friendly Resorts
Myoko has several resorts that are particularly good for families:
Ikenotaira Onsen Ski Resort is our top pick for families with young children. It has wide, gentle slopes, excellent beginner areas, and a relaxed atmosphere.
Akakura Kanko and Akakura Onsen offer a good mix — easy green and blue runs lower down, with more challenging terrain higher up for older kids and parents.
3. Good Ski School Options with English Instruction
Several reputable ski schools operate in Myoko and offer English-speaking lessons suitable for children and families:
Myoko Snowsports https://myokosnowsports.com – Popular for group and private lessons, including programs for young children. They have bases in Akakura and offer lessons across multiple resorts.
Canyons Myoko https://canyons.jp – Offers premium private ski and snowboard lessons across Akakura Kanko, Akakura Onsen, Ikenotaira, Suginohara and more. Known for experienced international instructors.
Escape Myoko Ski & Snowboard School https://escapemyoko.com – Provides personalised lessons at Akakura Onsen, Akakura Kanko, Suginohara, and Ikenotaira. Good for small groups and families.
Yodel Snow School https://yodelsnow.com – A long-established school in Akakura Onsen with a long history of teaching children and beginners.
Booking lessons in advance is recommended, especially during Japanese school holidays.
4. The Huge Advantage of a Private Chalet
Staying at a private chalet like Myoko Forest Chalet makes a massive difference when travelling with kids. You get:
A full kitchen so you can prepare familiar meals and snacks
Plenty of space for children to play without disturbing others
A private hot tub / ofuro for relaxing together after skiing
No strict check-in/out times or shared facilities
Room for everyone (up to 20 guests) without feeling cramped
We find that kids settle in much faster when they have their own space instead of staying in a busy hotel.
5. Easy Days and Flexible Planning
Myoko’s compact size means you can choose a different resort each day without long drives. On tired days, you can simply stay closer to the chalet, enjoy the forest surroundings, or visit nearby onsens. The relaxed pace suits families much better than the busier, more commercial resorts.
6. Beyond Skiing – Summer and Shoulder Seasons
Myoko is not just for winter. In summer, families love:
Easy forest walks and hiking trails
Boating and fishing at Lake Nojiri (20–30 minutes away)
Onsen visits
Playing in the garden and exploring the quiet surroundings
The chalet becomes a perfect base for relaxed family holidays year-round.
Our Honest Advice for Families
Myoko is especially good for families who want:
A genuine Japanese mountain experience
Shorter queues and less stress
Space and privacy in the evenings
The ability to adjust plans easily according to children’s energy levels
It may not have the flashy international vibe of Niseko, but what it offers instead is calm, authentic, and much more relaxing — which is often exactly what families need.
