Most people know Myoko for its legendary powder snow, but we have discovered that summer in Myoko is equally special — just in a completely different way.
The off-season here offers some of the most peaceful and beautiful mountain experiences in Japan. The crowds disappear, the forests turn vibrant green, and the area transforms into a perfect destination for nature lovers, families, and anyone seeking a relaxed escape.
Here is why we love Myoko in summer and what you can do during the warmer months.
1. Lush Green Forests and Stunning Scenery
In summer, Myoko becomes incredibly green. The dense forests surrounding the chalet come alive with fresh foliage, wildflowers, and the sound of birds and streams. The views of the mountains are sharp and clear on sunny days, and the air feels fresh and clean.
Early morning walks or evening forest bathing (shinrin-yoku) right from the chalet garden are some of our favourite simple pleasures.
2. Excellent Hiking and Nature Trails
Myoko offers a wide variety of hiking trails suitable for different fitness levels. Popular options include:
Naena Falls (one of the most impressive waterfalls in Niigata)
Mount Myoko and Mount Takada trails with panoramic views
Gentle forest paths around Lake Nojiri
The trails are much quieter than in the famous alpine areas, so you often have them almost to yourself.
3. Lake Nojiri – Boating, Fishing and Lakeside Relaxation
Lake Nojiri is only 20 minutes from Myoko Forest Chalet and is a highlight in summer. You can rent boats, try stand-up paddleboarding, or go fishing. The lakeside area has pleasant walking paths and cafés, making it perfect for a relaxed half-day outing.
4. Onsen Hopping and Relaxation
Summer is one of the best times to enjoy Myoko’s famous hot springs. After a day of hiking or exploring, soaking in a traditional onsen with mountain views is pure bliss. Akakura Onsen and nearby areas have several excellent options.
5. Outdoor Activities and Adventure
For more active days you can enjoy:
Mountain biking on forest trails
Cycling routes through the valleys
Kayaking or canoeing on nearby lakes
Golf at many of the scenic courses all within a short drive
The weather is generally pleasant (warm days, cool evenings), which makes outdoor activities comfortable.
6. No Crowds and Peaceful Chalet Life
One of the biggest advantages of summer in Myoko is the peacefulness. Unlike winter, when visitors come for skiing, summer feels wonderfully quiet. Staying at a private chalet like Myoko Forest Chalet means you have the entire property to yourselves — perfect for family time, gatherings with friends, reading under a tree, or simply enjoying the sound of the forest.
Why Choose Myoko for a Summer Escape?
Myoko offers the perfect balance — enough activities to keep you busy, but enough peace to truly unwind. The combination of beautiful nature, easy access from Tokyo, and the comfort of a private chalet makes it an ideal summer destination for couples, families, and groups of friends.
